At New Tech one of the graduation requirements is for every senior to complete a 50 hour Internship at a location of their choice. For my internship I went to the Napa Humane Society, Spay & Neuter Clinic where I helped maintain the front office and at times got experience as a Vet Tech. Below is my Internship Work Summary.

For my internship I worked at the Napa Humane Society. I found this internship to be very beneficial to me in many ways. It not only has helped me gain a better aspect of the working world, given me experience that I will need in the future, strengthened me in the area of the eight learning outcomes, but it also helped me to get my first part-time job.

I did not find this internship to be at all intellectually challenging as I had done a lot of my community service with the Napa Humane Society. I was able to jump straight into the work that was given to me. At Napa Humane, Jane and Wendi, whom I worked with the most, included me as part of the Napa Humane team, in which I still am. On top of that, I really enjoyed the work that I did for a number of reasons. Not only did it make me feel better about myself for the cause of the Humane Society, but the work I was doing I knew was a good step for me for my future career plans. For a career I would really like to get into the business/marketing world. The work I did with Napa Humane was a great start, as I started doing a lot of the marketing for the annual Cause for the Paws Benefit.

I also felt that this internship strengthened me with the eight learning outcomes. I felt that Citizenship and Ethics was one of the most concentrated learning outcomes that my work fits under. All of the work I was doing made me feel like a better person, because I felt like there was a benefit to it; I wasn’t just helping some big corporations build a w website. I was on in the world helping families adopt the right pet for them, as animals can be essential family members too. I was also helping a non-profit organization gain recognition and hopefully get a bigger name in our society.

On top of Citizenship and Ethics, I felt that Career Preparation, Collaboration, and Oral Communication were huge aspects of my work. I was learning about the working world through Jane and Wendi, preparing myself for my own career. I was working as a team with both of them and many others, all the while I was also out promoting, and meeting new people all of the new time. I had to know what I was doing, and how to be professional with everything that I did.

This internship was a great experience for me. It’s what basically got me my job at Pet Food Express, as I was with Napa Humane every other Saturday in the store talking with the managers, and getting a good taste of the atmosphere of the store. I am still volunteering with Napa Humane because for me, being and knowing that what I am doing is beneficial to more than just me makes me really happy. I would recommend this internship to anyone who has a passion for animals and helping a non-profit organization like Napa Humane grow.
