Welcome To Robert Skelton's Portfolio
Welcome again! Please feel free to look around check me out ;-P I'm 18 years old, living life, and enjoy a good MMORPG or MMOFPS ^_^ Anyways, I'm sure that you came to check out the content of my portfolio rather then listen to me talk so I will bid you farewell. Oh, one last thing... this website is best viewed using FireFox so if your using Internet Explorer your going to be missing out and there will be a few tiny problems with the automatic image resizing as well. Have fun.
My post-secondary plans are to pursue a career in the Administration of Justice. The skills that I feel are most important in this endeavor are Oral Communication, Written Communication, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking. A Peace Officer has to be able to think on their feet, communicate their ideas effectively and immediately, and work with others to get the job done or the suspect caught! I have provided an analysis of my skills in these four areas below, as well as multiple pieces of evidence.
Oral Communication is the ability to articulate your thoughts in a clear and precise manner. This skill also involves being able to convey an important message to people while being confident and engaging. Although cops are often thought of as just annoying guys that motorists have to watch out for, it takes oral communication skills to interview suspects, effectively converse with officers in the field, and to express your thoughts to others. I feel that my oral communication skills have improved greatly over the past two years, due to numerous project presentations and simply working with my group members.
Written Communication is the ability to articulate your thoughts in a clear and precise manner through your writing. This skill also involves being able to convey an important message to people while being confident and engaging. Written Communication skills are important to Peace Officers as well because every event that happens to an Officer must be reported in written form to his superiors. This is an important part of an officers work as Officers reports are often used in court to assist in the convicting of criminals and the freeing of innocents. I feel that my Written Communication skills have improved greatly over the past two years, due to numerous projects in which large or diverse reports had to be written.
Collaboration is the ability to work with others with the smallest amount of friction possible and, in essence, the ability to control a situation without the other people involved realizing it. This skill also involves being friendly, confident, easygoing. and engaging. Although normally people may see one or two Officers in squad cars it takes many more then that, often more then ten, working together to handle many public safety situations. I feel that my Collaboration skills have improved greatly over the past two years, mostly due to numerous group projects in which it was required for us to depend on one another for completion of the project.
Critical Thinking is the ability to work your thoughts on any problem or project into a clear and precise solution. This skill also involves being able to listen to mulitiple sources at once and decide which is the most trustworthy/accurate while always being aware of your surroundings. Officers of the Peace must always be able to decide the correct choice of action in any given situation in a very small amount of time. They may have mere seconds to work out a solution and articulate it to others before a fight breaks out or to know when a situation is too dangerous for his men and order thier retreat. I feel that my Critical Thinking skills have improved greatly over the past two years, due to numerous projects that required us to 'think outside of the box.'
Evidence for all above topics (and the remaining four learning outcomes) can be seen on the Oral Communication, Written Communication, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking pages, respectivley.
