YOU ARE MORE THAN A NUMBER

TRADITIONAL LARGE HIGH SCHOLS deal with so many students that they have had to create systems to maintain order and discipline. Because each staff memeber may only know a small percent of the students on campus, students are required to carry hall passes in order to go to the bathroom. Because each teacher works with so many students each day, they often cannot provide individual attention in the classroom. Because each councelor handles more than 400 students, they do not have the time to get to know much about their interests or goals. Because it's so easy to get lost on a campus of 2000 students, young people are quick to form groups, cliques and even gangs to create a sense of belonging. Because these institutions are so large, school administrators are often more focussed on crowd control issues than edcational ones.
