Course Description:
The purpose of this class is to increase reading fluency, comprehension, and written communication. Course topics include: self-evaluation of position and function in society; decision-making for personal growth and success; communicating successfully in today’s world; and, understanding and acceptance of diverse cultures. Students will learn to read for personal development and utilize the writing process. Throughout the course, students will create a reading/writing portfolio which includes samples of their work and self-assessments.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated through: observation; quizzes; self evaluation; rubric evaluation of writing assignments, reading logs, and final portfolio; and various other methods.
The final grade will be based on the following New Technology Learning Outcomes:
Work Ethic (20%)
English Content (30%)
Written Communication (30%)
Oral Communication (10%)
Critical Thinking (5%)
Collaboration (5%)
Late Work Policy:
If an assignment is not completed on time, students will lose work ethic points for the assignment. If there are no designated work ethic points, then the student will be marked down by one grade. If the lateness is due to an excused absence, there will be no penalty for work that is not completed on time (Assignments should be labeled “Absent” and arrangements should be made with the instructor).
