PLEASE NOTE: This is an essay I wrote in response to a growing apathy I have witnessed in my fellow students, as well as in the younger generations. This is a demonstration of my ethical approach to my intrapersonal relationships, and also a delineation of my upright citizenship.

The Insecurities of a Society

My fellow students; I come to you filled with anger. I am angry with America. I am angry at the society that raised me, and taught me. I am angry at the thoughts that fill the heads of millions of Americans; thoughts of prejudice, and hate. I feel this anger, because I have seen first hand the hate of this proud country. Many Americans can look at me, and see something they hate. They see a nigger, and a fag. What they fail to see is me. The sad truth is that this is the case for millions of Americans. They are all victims. They are all hated. They are all angry. And so, my friends, I come to you filled with anger. But I also come to you with a purpose. I come here today asking for your help in a worthy cause. I ask you to come out of the shadows of the valley of prejudice, and to stand with me upon the mountain of justice. I ask you to open your eyes and see the cause of America's blindness. I need you, as my fellow Americans and as my peers, to want to help your country change. I ask you to demand a better place for your children, and for your children's children. Come with me. Help your country change. Set an example for future generations.

What causes people to hate their fellow man? Is it that they feel that they are superior? Or is it something deeper? I strongly feel that a person's hate for another person goes far beyond a superiority complex. People hate out of fear. One could say that, for example, a member of the Ku Klux Klan truly feels that he is superior to African-Americans. But it is my belief that he does not truly feel this. The KKK fears the Black man. They fear him because the Black man is different than they are. They do not understand why people are diverse, and they mask their ignorance and their fear behind a wall of tough, White Supremacy. It is easier for them to claim superiority, than to admit ignorance, or fear. These same men would argue along the same lines as Social Darwinism. They would say that heterosexual white males are in fact superior, simply because they have the ability to oppress homosexuals, blacks, and females. They would argue that, according to Social Darwinism, they have "evolved" to a more superior level than any other group on Earth. They would go on to say that this is the reason they have the ability to oppress, and that it is their responsibility to oppress - that God expects them to do so. Again, however, I say that these men oppress, and hate, out of fear. They do not understand why people are different, and cannot accept those differences, and so they choose, instead, to hate those differences, and to oppress those people who are different. A Christian might argue against homosexuality, saying that it is unnatural; that God did not create gays. If this is the same person that believes that God creates all life, and God can do no evil, then I would say that yes, God did create gays. Furthermore, because people are homosexual naturally, and without any foreign influence, homosexuality is natural. Nothing more than genes causes homosexuality, the same way genes cause heterosexuality, or red hair, or long legs.

My fellow Americans, my colleagues, my peers, my friends: I have come to you today, because I trust you. I trust that you can take responsibility for our country. I trust that you can cast aside your fears, your anger, your hatred, and your prejudice, and open your eyes, your ears, and your mind to the richness, the fullness, the beauty of justice.
