Citizenship and Ethics
I had to confront my own beliefs, morals and ethics when I began working on this project about welfare reform. Welfare reform is a sensitive topic and different people have different views about the importance of welfare in America. I happen to be a democrat who believes strongly in Welfare because I know people who have been helped by welfare in the past and I think it is a great program. Through my research in this project I discovered that for the vast majority of people who go on welfare the program works exactly as it's designed to and they are able to get off welfare within two years. The point of welfare is not to support people that are lazy and don't want to work. Welfare is designed as a temporary aid to families who are having trouble surviving economically. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) does not simply provide people with financial assistance, TANF also helps people get and keep stable jobs so they can go off of welfare and support their family on their own. I loved this project because I got the chance to back up my beliefs with some solid research and reinforce my original opinion on the subject. My group then prepared a power point and presented our findings to our class and teachers.
The Project
I work hard at New Tech High to get good grades and do well on tests. I am proud that I have received an award for being on the honor roll last year and a certificate stating that I received recognition on the Golden State Exam in U.S. History. It is important to me to be a good citizen in the New Tech High community. These awards show that I am succeeding here.
