Critical Thinking
I chose the Food Court project as an example of my critical thinking skills because it is one of the longest, most involved projects I have worked on this year. I worked on this project in a small group in my Political Studies class. Our assignment was to pretend that we were on the student council of a High School and it was our job to choose five out of a possible twelve restaurants to be in our school's new food court. We had a survey that all the students at the school had taken. We also had an example of a food item that each restaurant would serve and the price. From this information we could estimate how much profit each restaurant would make. We had many other interests to consider besides profit. Various student groups, parents and members of the community wanted certain restaurants for various reasons. We had to try our best to choose restaurants that would please everyone, provide students with nutritious, tasty food and still make money for our school. A lot of thought went into our final decision. After we took all of the information into consideration and chose our five restaurants we presented our choices to the school board.
The Project
I wrote this essay a few days after I finished reading the play "Death of a Salesman." The essay is written in the perspective of the play's main character Willy Loman. I had to really know Willy's character in order to write as though I were him. I am not used to writing from someone else's perspective and I found it rather challenging because I had to think about how Willy would express himself and how he would feel about different topics. I put a lot of thought into this essay and I am satisfied with the result.
